With fall in full swing, it’s time to talk skin. As the temperature drops, skin loses its natural moisture when faced with the cold, dry air found in winter climates. While the products you use for the transitioning weather conditions are helpful, there are natural alternatives that will have your skin thriving.

Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., an Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, anti-aging medicine, and chelation therapy suggests incorporating the following foods into your diet to help your skin glow and remain healthy for the fall/winter:

OLIVE OIL

Olive oil contains unsaturated fats that provide anti-aging benefits. It is also rich in vitamin E, which can be used to naturally treat and prevent dry skin.

AVOCADO

This superfood contains fats to help lubricate a youthful skin as well as protect it from damage.

OATMEAL

This breakfast staple contains antioxidants along with vitamins and minerals that improve skin health. When applied topically, the fibers in oatmeal help slough away dead skin and prevent redness.

SWEET POTATOES

The perfect source of vitamin A, sweet potatoes are essential for locking in moisture to give your skin a healthy glow.

CARROTS

Carrots contain the carotenoids beta-carotene and lycopene—both of which help shield the skin from UV damage.

GRAPEFRUIT

When buying grapefruit, opt for one with a red-pinkish hue because these colors are from lycopene, meaning it is also loaded with skin-smoothing carotenoid.

BROCCOLI

Broccoli contains collagen synthesizing vitamin C, Collagen is essential for keeping the skin firm and helping to protect from wrinkles.

SPINACH

Dark, leafy greens are filled with iron, omega-4 fatty acids, and vitamins A, B, and E, which protect skin and improve your immune system. The phytochemicals and folates also help keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

COCONUT OIL

Rich in fats, coconut oil provides lubrication. It also prevents acne, thanks to the antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.
