“IT IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL ART NETWORKS IN THE WORLD”

Welcoming only the most exquisite pieces from across the ages, The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) is known as the world’s leading art and antiques fair. This high-end exhibition creates a platform for international dealers to showcase the finest art to European, North American, Central & South American, and Asian connoisseurs. For almost 30 years, this not-for-profit foundation has presented wide range of antique as well as contemporary arts and antiques. TEFAF hosts three fairs per year, and we got an exclusive look at the New York Fall 2017 fair held at the historic Park Avenue Armory.

TEFAF COFFEE TALKS

This year, TEFAF New York Fall 2017 opened each day with Coffee Talks, which held a carefully curated panel. Those included were Christopher Apostle, Senior Vice President of Old Master Paintings at Sotheby’s; Michael Gallagher, Conservator in Charge at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Nanne Dekking, CEO of Artory Inc.; Andrea Danese, President and CEO of Athena Art Finance; Johnathan Wahl, Jewelry Artist and Director of the Jewelry Center; and many other notable panelists. Discussions included intriguing topics such fingerprints in paint, jewelry as power, art finance, intimacy in sculptures, and painting conservation in the Venetian Lagoon.

ART GALLERIES IN THE DIGITAL WORLD

Of course, one of the main reasons to attend an art gallery is to escape from the outside world, and discover a whimsical beauty. However, it seems that the digital world has changed that. Independent curator Sarah Archer observes, “To experience a museum through a smartphone camera’s viewfinder is so commonplace now as to be unremarkable. Such a picture is not so much a portrait of a particular work of art as it is proof ― shared with the a wide social network ― of the photographer’s own encounter with it.” She goes on to say, “The notion of standing or sitting in a museum gallery for hours on end is strange to us now.”

I’ve never been to anything like this before but it seems like such a unique way to explore various pieces that you’d typically have to travel thousands of miles for! The Park Avenue Armory is the perfect venue for such a grand event!

It’s an interesting point the way the digital age has impacted the museum experience. I’ve never been much into museums, but have visited my fair share of them while traveling. It’s true a picture can’t really do it justice.
