Private jets, mega yachts, luxury cars – these are the things people associate with the most luxurious ways to travel. But you forgot one form of transportation: trains! No, we aren’t talking about train cars full of people standing around and commuting for work. Instead, we are talking about the royal way to travel by train.

The Maharajas Express is India’s latest and most luxurious train. It won “The World’s Leading Luxury Train” award for seven years in a row. Passengers can choose between four routes, each of which lasts seven days. The train went into service in 2010. There are 14 guest carriages offering space for 88 guests. The rooms are inspired by Indian royalty: antiques, wall-to-wall carpeting, semi-precious stones, huge panoramic windows. It is all in there.

You won’t have to rely on public restrooms in old train stations like people on regular trains. The Maharaja Express’ guest rooms offer private bathrooms plus toiletries. Modern LCD TVs, dedicated staff incl. paramedics are also included in your journey. The price for all of this? The cheapest option is the Deluxe Cabin which is around 112 square feet and will cost you $6,340. The most luxurious option is the Presidential Suite. It measures almost 450 square feet and occupies an entire carriage. You can book it for $23,700.

There are various dining options on the train. Whether you like Indian cuisine, Chinese, Continental or International cuisine, it is all there. You can enjoy all your food and drinks will looking at the stunning Indian countryside. The train stops in various cities (different stops depending on the trip you booked). Passengers will have plenty of time for sightseeing (e.g. Taj Mahal) and there are also offsite events such as exclusive dinners.

All in all, the Maharajas Express is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be on the bucket list of every world traveler. Sit back, relax and feel taken back in time.
