The Way Station

A TARDIS + Sweet, Sweet, Boozy Feminism = Success for A Brooklyn Bar.
The Way Station, New York City’s premiere (And by premiere I mean one and only) Doctor Who themed bar hosted its first ever ladies night Tuesday. Entitled “77% on 7/7,” women were given seventy-seven percent off of their bar tabs. As a huge fan of Doctor Who, who also happens to be a woman, this was a must-see event.

As I arrived early, I was surprised to see the bar packed with women who were there to take advantage of the most refreshing ladies night at a bar since women were allowed in bars. The excited attitude was unfortunately dampened by the crush of too many people in too small of a space. Still I persisted and was happy that my bar tab was reflecting the wage gap. “Feminism for the win!” I exclaimed to the bartender as I ordered my five dollar Star Wars themed “Luke Skywalker Margarita,” which turned out to be exactly like a regular margarita, but all that much tastier because of my excitement over having such a nertastically named drink.

As the night went on and the crowd reduced to a slightly less crowded (but equally sweaty) mass of human bodies, my cocktail was complemented with the sultry sound of music by singer and songwriter Jen Mundia, who immediately reminds you of famous artists like Lauryn Hill and Corrinne Bailey Rae.

As I listened to the music and sipped my cocktail, I saw one of the regular customers, Marsha Hinds, seated in the small space between the bar and the bathroom (which is in the shape of a 1960s British police box, commonly known to Doctor Who fans as the TARDIS) and I asked her what kept her coming back to The Way Station. She told me that “This happens to be the only bar that I ever frequent because I like the steampunk aura, and I like the dedication to Doctor Who… I’ve never found that at any other bar, so this is the one I go to again and again. It really is a wonderful atmosphere.”

Despite the cramped space, “77% on 7/7” night at the Way Station certainly fulfilled all of my requirements for a great bar atmosphere—feminism, geekery, great music, and a good cocktail? What more could a girl ask for? (Well besides Chris Evans. Call me, you beautiful, beautiful dorito shaped man)
