Decorating your living space can be a lot of work and can require a lot of thought. But let’s be honest, furniture shopping and interior designing your new space is a heck of a lot of fun. My only advice is; do not let a location, space, layout, or building define how you want your interiors to look. For those of you who can’t decide whether to go completely modern or to have a little bit of classic style mixed in, then go Transitional.

If you live in a modern building in a modern city, don’t let this define you: i.e.: I live in a high-rise, on a high floor, in the center of manhattan, with floor-to-ceiling large windows, with skyline views. You couldn’t get more modern than this. You would think minimum and uncomfortable (I like to call it) couches that fill the whole ‘modern’ theme would fit in perfectly, however, it’s just not me. I wanted it to be a bit more home-y, classic, and timeless. So after giving it a thought, I knew I didn’t want to go completely modern nor too traditional, so I decided to go “Transitional”.

Transitional style is a married blend of the traditional mixed with the contemporary. This style of design involves furniture, finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless, yet modern design. Furniture lines are simple, sophisticated, and soft featuring rounded profiles. The fabric can be diverse as graphic patterns on overstuffed sofas and textured chenilles on sleek wood frames. I have a sheep skin rug over my all mirrored-glass modern coffee table to soften things up. Curves combine with straight lines in a transitional style interior to deliver a look that balances both masculine and feminine attributes for a comfortable, contemporary design. The most modern thing in my place is a platform bed, but I spiced it up with a down comforter, plush over-sized pillows, and sateen sheets. The scales of the pieces are ample but not overwhelming. A lack of ornamentation and decoration keeps the focus on the simplicity and sophistication of the design as well.

Mix and match some of your pieces to create this look. Place a victorian antique mirror above your fireplace, next to your flat screen. Mix some up a few contemporary chairs next to your wooden fireplace, and deck out your windows with beautiful curtains instead of blinds. It’s all about mixing the old with the new to create this glamorous look, some of my favorite furniture companies to help you with this look include: Roche Bobois, Haute-House,  One Kings Lane, and Prospect and Vine. A great app for decorating tips and interior design inspiration is Houzz.
