Oscars Nominations Are Out – Festival de Cannes Movies Among Them

In less than two months, the entire world is going to look at Los Angeles as the annual Oscars awards will be presented. The list of nominees was just released and it is great to see that many movies that were shown at the Cannes Film Festival 2022 will be among them. Unsurprisingly, they include the two biggest fan favorites: Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick.

Elvis premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2022 and received a staggering 12 minutes standing ovation. The biographical drama, directed by Baz Luhrman, follows the life of the famous American rock and roll icon, Elvis Pressley, and is told from the perspective of his manager. The storyline highlights the complex relationship between Elvis and his manager as Pressley rises to fame and stardom. Elvis received 8 Oscars nominations including Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound and Costume Design.

Top Gun: Maverick was another fan favorite at the Festival last year. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film is a sequel of the 1986 Top Gun movie which also featured Tom Cruise as the lead actor. Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is confronted with his past and must train elite flying graduates for a mission that seems impossible to achieve. Many critics have claimed that the sequel is better than the original and we don’t disagree. The movie is nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Visual Effects, Film Editing, Music – Original Song, Writing – Adapted Screenplay and Sound.

But there is more good news: another five movies that took part in the Cannes Film Festival 2022 have been nominated for at least one Oscars award. Among them are: Triangle of Sadness By Ruben Ostlund for Best Picture, Directing and Writing – Original Screenplay; All that Breaths by Shaunak Sen for Documentary feature film; Close by Lukas Dhont for International feature film; EO by Jerzy Skolimowski for International feature film; Le Pupille by Alice Rohrwacher for Short Film.
