Macallan Releases Its Oldest Whiskey Ever

$125,000! That’s how much whiskey lovers and collectors will have to pay to get one of only 288 bottles of Macallan’s “The Reach”. The Scottish whiskey manufacturer just releases its oldest whiskey ever. It is 81 years old and crafted from a single, sherry-seasoned oak cask. The deep auburn colored single malt whiskey comes in a mouth-blown glass decanter, held by three hands. The sculpture was designed by the Scottish sculptor Saskia Robinson.

The nose of the Whiskey is a combination of dark chocolate, sweet cinnamon, peat, plums and leather. According to Macallan its palate can be described as treacle toffee, bramble jam, lycorice, crystalized ginger and woodsmoke before giving way to an intensely rich, sweet and smoky finish. It was Macallan’s Master Whiskey Maker, Kristeen Campbell, who decided now was the best time to release “The Reach”.

To make the whiskey even more special, the cabinet protecting the bottle is made out of a fallen elm tree that previously stood on the Macallan Estate since 1940. Once the cabinet open, the iconic three hands sculpture becomes visible and each of them has a meaning. The first is for the Macallan factory workers of 1940 who protected this whiskey from all the hardships during that time. The second is for Allan Shiach who ran the distillery at that time. And the third one is for Kristeen Campbell who decided on its release.
