Take The Plunge, With Class

A trend that never seems to go out of style, whether it’s a low cut number or a shorter hemline, here’s how to pull it off without looking like you work in the red light district. Today, we get many of our trendy fashions from designers, and the people who wear them. We see them on the red carpet at award shows and premieres, and on the covers of magazines always appearing risky, but elegant- sexy glamorous but tasteful. Their confidence matches their hair-which seems shinier, their smiles brighter and their hemlines- well, shorter.

Fashionistas such as Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Jessical Biel rock the thigh-high split or deep plunge lines on the red carpet almost frequently. Who can forget JLo’s iconic green Versace Grammy dress- which was so iconic, it became a popular staple fashionista Halloween costume. Jolie dazzled in an Atelier Versace one-shoulder champagne gown with a steep slit that ended in the middle of her left thigh. Theron’s pale pink Dior Couture gown turned heads as well, but her bare legs peeking out from under her dress were the real head-turners. Biel went the more conservative route with a full-sleeve Elie Saab Haute Couture lace gown. While she covered her chest and arms, her legs were out for all to see.

The thigh-high split is a sexy option for a night out; femme fatales of all ages, shapes and sizes are donning the deep-split gowns. The only necessary trait: a great pair of legs. If the slit is high, make sure that the hemline is longer, and neckline shorter (flouncy sleeves like Jolie above is a nice touch considering her neckline is also low). The trick is to not show everything, but to be a little bit of a mystery underneath. The same goes with wearing a deep plunge line option. You can pair a deep plunge line top with some long denims, or a volume skirt. Keep it classy by not showing everything all at once.

Hitting runways as early as the 70s, the deep-plunge lines were made popular by designers such as Ossie Clark and Givenchy. Today, people like Stella McCartney and Haider Ackermann continue the trend, giving it new twists. Their versatility is what makes them a staple in every woman’s closet. Some have plunging necklines paired with extra deep slits, others have bold animal prints and some have romantic prints with ruffled fabric. A nice addition to the maxi dress, the deep split gives the style an airy yet glamorous look. You can go from the beach to dinner with little effort.

The summer hasn’t ended yet, so go ahead and take that plunge.
